ebrary Gives ALA Members More DRM!

I looked at this eBrary interface that purports to offer free, full-text  library-related content for a year, as a National Library Week bonus for ALA members.  I found the interface to be pretty confusing, and when I read step number one:

"Get ebrary Reader, the free software that allows browsing, searching, and other advanced features."

I decided that was all the further I was going with it. I would be more likely to use it at work, where  I am blocked from downloading software of any sort.

After reading Jessamyn's post this morning, I did some more browsing, and had a look at the Terms of Service which indicates that you have to actively opt out if you don't want them to share your info with other interested parties for marketing purposes.  This appears to be in addition to clicking the opt-out box for ebrary-related marketing on the sign-up page.

Also, on the sign-up page, I don't see anything that forces the user to identify him or herself as an ALA member.  So, really, it's available to anyone, and isn't just a perk to a select group. If I'm being daft, and didn't find the key under the doormat, let me know.   Since I have pretty decent access to library lit via our consortium, I'm definitely passing on this "gift."

I think that was a fake come on, and I'm feeling disrespected. Looks like anyone can sign up. Sorta like the fella who has 10 girlfriends and gives each one of them the same special one-of-a-kind gift. Just wait til they all find out....

Well I always sign up as Melvil Dewey to these things anyhow. I'd love to know if being an ALA member confers any special benefit, because I couldn't find any, depsite what the press release said.
