Library Community Relief Links

Here's a list of links to sites that address library community recovery from Hurricane Katrina: helping library workers and their families; fundraising; lists of affected libraries; recovery and preservation efforts. It's a small list so far, but I'll be updating as I find links. Consider checking your library school's website or alumni association to see if they are coordinating projects or fundraising. I'll gladly include information about archives and museums as well.

PLEASE NOTE: The Red Cross cannot take in-kind donations (food, toiletries, clothing, etc.) from individuals or groups at this stage in the relief effort because:

Collections of items require valuable and scarce resources such as time, money, and personnel to sort, clean, and distribute them, which come at the expense of the emergency activities relief workers are attempting to perform.

Money Honey (Where to donate money and supplies)

Jessamyn caught this concise Guideline for Donating Books put out by the Louisiana Library Association. Basically, they don't want or need donated books. They need money. (10/12/05)

Alibris has teamed with the Texas Library Association by hosting a wish-list book drive for libraries affected by hurricanes. Alibris will warehouse the books until libraries are ready to accept donations. (10/11/05)

First Book Katrina Relief (9/20/05) "Help First Book provide new books to children affected by Hurricane Katrina, in partnership with the Library of Congress and leaders of the publishing industry. Just 50 cents sponsors a new book for a displaced child or devastated school."

US Department of Education (9/14/05) This is terrific model for matching up institutions with givers. It's a list of schools damaged by Katrina, or schools that are serving pupils displaced by Katrina, and their wish lists.

Friends of Mississippi Libraries (9/13/05) In concert with the Mississippi Library Commission, the FoML has set up a Rebuild Mississippi Libraries Fund. At present, there is no online mechanism for donations. Please send checks to:

Illinois Library Association Disaster Relief Fund (9/12/05) 100 percent of donations will be sent to the state library agency or state library association of the donor's choice. ILA is also looking for sponsors to match individual donations.

International Reading Association (9/11/05)
IRA is accepting monetary donations to support hurricane relief. Contributions will be directed to the needs of children and schools in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. (IRA also has had to cancel its annual conference which was to be in New Orleans in December).

Network for Good (9/11/05)
Founded in 2001 by the Time Warner Foundation, AOL Inc., Yahoo Inc., and the Cisco Foundation, lists dozens of organizations whose relief efforts need support. The organizations are listed in one of three categories: Emergency Response, Children & Families, and Rebuild & Recover.

The Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Midsouth region (9/11/09)
School Library Journal reports that this group is starting a campaign to help schools and libraries in the Katrina-affected region. No info on the site yet, but keep checking.

Texas Library Association: Texas Libraries Step Up (9/14/05)
TLA is working to set up a book distribution mechanism, and has made it possible for you to donate through mail or online. (Update: Instructions on where and how to donate. LARGE SHIPMENTS are asked to call ahead.)

CQ Press (9/14/05) "In an effort to help our customers restore their collections, we will replace, where feasible, all CQ Press books and journals lost in the storm."

SOLINET Job Bank (9/11/05)
"Because of the disruption in employment caused by Hurricane Katrina, the SOLINET Job Bank is currently accepting offers of temporary as well as permanent employment -- wherever it is available. Any library or cultural institution within the US that has a position to offer may use this site."

National Endowment for the Humanities Grants (9/9/05) NEH is offering grants to cultural institutions, including libraries, in the Gulf Coast Region.

ALA Offers Dues Relief for Members Affected by Katrina (9/9/05)

FOLUSA: Friends in Need progam (9/9/05)
Friends of Libraries USA offers assistance to libraries in disaster situations. Library Journal reports that FOLUSA has relaxed its donation policy.

The LPL has offered to create a database of housing available in the Southeast for library workers and their families displaced by the Hurricane. Moderated list: a means to solicit and recruit a means for information professionals from around the country to network and volunteer to help with library and archive recovery and clean-up and to help information professionals and their families recover.

SOLINET: Recovery Information Resources
Among the assistance SOLINET offers is help determining what to do with collections damaged by the storm; information on disaster recovery resources, including recovery vendors and supplies; telephone consultions; and information on recovery funding from government organizations. SOLINET is presently developing a list of preservation experts from around the region who can provide much-needed on-site support.

~~Free Generator from Illinois!!! Will deliver!~~ (9/11/05) Generator found home Sun. evening.
Someone from a farm in Rochelle, IL (yeah..they name towns after me) emailed me this morning to say that he had a generator that he wanted to donate, and would deliver. 300 kw diesel run generator that produces electricity. It is in it's own trailer van, with a tank holding 500 gal. of diesel fuel. He said it was more than a house or church could use. He would prefer to donate it to a school, shelter, clinic or other non-profit. Email Pat or Len at Maplehurst Farms for more information.

If you are interested in donating funds to help Louisiana public libraries devastated by hurricane Katrina, financial donations for public libraries may be sent to our Louisiana Library Foundation and we will forward the money to the appropriate library or community. If you want to donate to a specific library, they can just indicate that and we will make sure they get it.
