Library Fortune Cookie Project

The Library Fortune Cookie Project is a proposed action for National Library Week, or even sooner, jumping off of the negative library signage mini-theme that Aaron's covered (I think there are more...please remind me if there's a tag or if you have pictures of bummer signs).   At my shop we've been talking about National Library Week activities, and seeing Fiddling Librarian's happy sign gave me an idea.

I suggested that during National Library Week, we place signs around the library that are there for  no other reason than to send positive messages about the library and its users.  Like:

  • We're glad you're here
  • Free thinking zone
  • Thank you
  • No charge
  • We can help
  • Take your shoes off. Sit a spell. Y'all come back now, y'hear (okay...just joking a bout the shoes).

Share your ideas and shining examples of signs that let patrons know they are welcome and appreciated.  I wanted to wait til closer to NLW, but understand that the placement of signs takes time and committee deliberation at some libraries, so thought I'd pitch the idea now.   Another idea is to tuck messages into random books.  They might not be found for months or years, but that makes it even better.    Also welcome are ideas to expand this project beyond Flickr.

What an awesome idea! I just added it to the agenda for my staff meeting next week. We always do a little free range creative thinking during our meetings, and happy signs will be our topic this time!
