I know you can build a fire in the snow anywhere there's snow, wood, and matches, but it seems more appropriate and satisfying here in the northland. I had winter fires in Bloomington, but a view of a snowy bluff is so much more picturesque than a view of a gas station's monster flag. I also appreciate that I no longer have a 24/7 car wash, a main throughfare, and pit bull-loving ya-hoos in my backyard.
I am still loving winter in Wisconsin, even when it's 19 below zero. Especially when it's 19 below zero. There is about a foot of accumulated snow from a few weeks' of snowfalls, and we're getting some more tonight. I've been surprised at how earnest everyone here is about shoveling their walks. Sure, there's an ordinance, but there was one in Bloomington, too, which a lot of folks paid no mind. I started walking this week, and in the 20 or so blocks I've walked, have seen fewer than two or three unshoveled walks. I love hearing the chuff-chuff of shovels denuding sidewalks and driveways, and have even cleared my neighbor's walk as well as mine because it's just so darn fun. I'm just glad I don't live in upstate New York.
